The Birds Hill Duathlon series has been a great beginner and expert race alike. Sometimes getting past the intimidation factor of your first race is often the first and hardest step. Below is information to help prepare you for this race and answer common questions you might have.

This section will constantly grow as we gain feedback from our racers like you to determine the needs.

Duathlon... What is it?
Not to be confused with Biathlon, a Duathlon is a competition that is composed of running and biking. The usual format for a duathlon is run-bike-run, meaning you start with a run, then transition to the bike, then transition back to running again. Your time starts when you start the race, and finishes when you cross the finish line. This means that the time it takes you to switch from running to cycling and back again is part of your race time.

Basic Tips
  • Hydrate before, during and after the race.
  • Don't wear extremely baggy clothing on the bike - this especially applies to nylon jackets.
  • Headphones (ipods) are not allowed in a multisport event, and you will receive a time penalty or be disqualified if you do use them.
  • Make sure you put your helmet on before you remove your bike from the rack during the first transition from the run to the bike. When you return into transition from the bike leg, DO NOT remove your helmet until your have racked your bike which also needs to be racked in the same spot your parked it originally.
  • Have Fun!!!

Is everybody really good?
Some people are, some aren't. Just like your local 5K, there is a group of hardcore athletes going for the win, there are a bunch of middle of the pack types, and there are some back of the pack racers. The participants in a duathlon really cover the full spectrum of athletes, and everyone is welcome, regardless of ability. We especially welcome new racers to the sport.

Is a mountain bike OK?
Absolutely. Many athletes who are not sure if they are going to commit to the sport and do not have access to a road bike find it quite comfortable on a mountain bike. You will have to work a little harder, but what's a race without a little challenge. Gord's Ski and Bike is currently working on starting up a triathlon rental program that might include bikes. More details to follow.

What do I wear?
On a warm day, shorts and a short or sleevless shirt will do. Cooler weather sometimes warrents a jacket, long fingered gloves, or even tights. The key is to wear clothing that is breathable, especially on cooler days.

Bike shorts offer great padding for the bike section but can be a little bulky on the run. Triathlon shorts have thinner padding that will not bother you when running. It's a good idea to bring a light cover up for after the race to stay warm.

How early should I show up for my first race?
It is best to arrive 60-90min before the race. The Gord's Birds Hill Duathlon races start at 6:45 sharp. On-site Registration closes at 6:00, so it's important that you hand in your waiver forms, pay and get your timing chip before then. Your bike must be racked and all gear is to be in the transition 5min before the race starts. The earlier you arrive, the more time you have for warm up and setup.

How is a race timed?
The races are timed using the ChampionChip® system. Each participant will receive a small transponder (chip) attached to a soft, comfortable neoprene strap. You must fasten the strap to your left ankle prior to the start of the event.

The chip will automatically register your time as you finish each leg of the race, and when you cross the finish line. No chip means no times will be recorded.

After crossing the finish line, you must return your timing chip or you will be charged the replacement cost. If you drop out of the event, you must be sure to stop by the finish line and return your chip.
